A leadership program named and operated by adults with developmental and intellectual disabilities. There are groups in Coos/Curry, Douglas and Klamath Counties. The purpose of Open People is to increase our customers’ participation in their communities, to assist them to overcome barriers, increase their confidence and self-advocacy, and to brainstorm ideas and ways to solve problems, discover and express their unique abilities, and live their lives to the fullest degree possible.
Open People is a peer-to-peer group that provides our customers with a safe place to discuss their concerns. Open People provides opportunities to meet, connect, and interact with others. It is a place where people can get involved, and try new activities, learn new things, develop lasting relationships, and obtain life-enriching opportunities they might not have otherwise.
Some of the activities Open People has been involved with are: leadership trainings, art classes, advocacy (a trip to visit our legislators at the State Capitol in Salem), safety training from the police and sheriff’s office, vocational training, to name just a few. Open People also participates with parades, dances, and holiday events.
